AGUSIL

After graduating from the Barcelona School of Fine Arts in 1999, Catalan artist Agusil immediately embarked on a brilliant career as a painter. Women’s faces fascinate him and he was quickly drawn to portraits, which he worked for many years alongside his cousin Maria, with whom he developed a unique technique.

He is inspired both by the photographs and by the people he sees to build his multicolored portraits, capturing at times a seductive look, a mysterious expression…

The spots of color contrast with the piercing eyes and sculpted lips, which reveal the full character of his portraits To achieve this result, the artist covers his canvases with resonant colors of oil and acrylic paint, which he then returns to work with a spatula or brush. He is heavily influenced by contemporary artists such as the Chinese painter Kwangho Shin or Georg Baselitz and his work is based on “action painting”, which is a movement that emphasizes the physical performance of the painter. Agusil works from instinct with quick and sure gestures and leaves a lot of room for randomness. Since it is applied with large gestures and often mixed with water, the paint runs downwards, which creates relief designs and effects with unexpected lights and in this way gravity and materiality dictate their laws. He wants to let his subconscious express itself in the spots that at first seem random but always end up embodying a brilliantly alive character.

Today, he continues his artistic research on his own and his work evolves towards more and more saturated colors and towards forms that feed on abstract experiments, without losing each of its figuration.
