LOUIS ROURA

Sant Miquel de Campmajor (Pla de l’Estany) 1943.

Lluís Roura is one of the most recognized Catalan painters both at home and internationally. His landscape oils, which capture the atmosphere of the land filtered through the particular sensitivity of the artist’s eye, have become classic works. His talent has extended to painting, illustration, sculpture and photography. He has exhibited in galleries and spaces around the world, and in 2017 he received the Creu de Sant Jordi, one of the highest distinctions awarded by the Catalan Government.

Although Lluís Roura can be considered a self-taught painter, he studied drawing at La Llotja in Barcelona and received the advice of painters Fèlix Revello de Toro and Frederic Marés, not forgetting Joan de Palau, who initiated him into painting, at the time Roura was working at a farm, at the same time that Father Joan Prat was teaching him art history lessons.

From 1967 until 1981, he participated in numerous painting competitions throughout Spain, from which he obtained considerable awards, among which the second drawing prize of the International Biennial of Sport of Barcelona should be highlighted, and the Medal of Honor of the Comtessa de Barcelona award, in Madrid, which he received from HM Queen Sofia in 1981.

He held his first solo exhibition in 1970, in Vic (Barcelona), and since then his work has been presented in nearly a hundred exhibitions throughout the state.

In 1985 he made his international debut with his first solo exhibition abroad, at the Acquavella gallery in Caracas (Venezuela), then in Geneva, Switzerland, Pertús and Cabestany (France), Vienna (Austria), Miami (USA) , Saint Petersburg (Russia) and Brussels (Belgium). He has also participated in ARCO 82-83 in Madrid and ART-BASSEL 82 in Switzerland.

We can find his pictorial work in public spaces such as the Parish Church of l’Escala, the Olympic Museum of Lausanne, the Museum of Foreign Art in Sofia (Bulgaria), the Barcelona Football Club Museum.,The Mayte Spinola Museum in Marmolejo (Jaen), the Basilica of Castelló d’Empùries, the church of Sant Martí d’Empúries, the church of Sant Pere de Figueres, where the painter’s most monumental work of 3×5 meters “The Landscape of the Baptism of Jesus” is placed, and at the Museu de l’Empordà in Figueres, as well as sculptural works in different spaces in the Girona county: L’Escala, Figueres, Vilatenim, Mata-Porqueres, Massanes (La Selva)

Roura has also devoted himself to the illustration of books that in the different editions add up to more than one hundred thousand copies distributed and almost all sold out, most edited by himself: “Els pobles de l’Empordà” by Montserrat Vayreda, ” From Cerdanya to Empordà, journey of Francisco de Zamora followed by Lluís Roura and Josep Valls”, “Camprodon, a valley of the Pyrenees” with Baltasar Porcel, “L’Escala, images of three centuries” with Lurdes Boix, “Terra Santa Any 2000” by Josep Valls and “Els Aiguamolls de l’Empordà”, with Jordi Sargatal.

The illustrations of his latest book, in collaboration with the writer Lurdes Boix and entitled “Trini, la Tonyina de l’Escala” were exclusively exhibited at the Port 25 Gallery in l’Escala.

Lluís Roura is also very passionate about photography and travel.
